Hi
I would like to ask the developers of GreedyTorrent a couple of questions. I hope you can take time from you "valueable" schedule to answer these.
The first obvious questions is; why the hell? Do I need to elaborate? Well, OK: What is the point of creating a tool like this? Do you feel that this is something that will help the world of filesharing?
Do you guys even know how filesharing works? BitTorrent is genius in many ways. Perhaps the greatest one is the way it can create an incentive for users to actually share what they download, and not just delete the torrent after they are done downloading (well, some people do on public trackers, but that's not where this tool will mainly be used, is it?).
If you take this incentive away from the users, what is left? Will the BitTorrent private tracker system suffer the same fate as other P2P protocols? I hope not. I don't believe it will either, because your program will be blocked by SysOps with the least bit of skills. This is therefore not a very big concern. I am mainly curious why anyone would spend valuable manhours creating a program whose main, or only, purpose is to cause trouble. You are in my eyes no better than hackers and virus makers.
What are your views on this? Am I completely off track about your goal here? |

Hi Kenny,
Well, I also believe BitTorrent is a great protocol and its going to live forever because of its simplicity, the way its designed and the tit-for-tat algorithm which gets better download speeds for faster uploading peers.
This is a survival kit for a leech, its meant only for survival of a poor uploader on private trackers that demands a 1:1 ratio. There could be times when you can't maintain a 1:1 ratio. For example, you are downloading a very large file, lets say 15GiB in weeks, which is well seeded, no DHT and 0 peers. Even before the file is downloaded completely the ratio at the tracker can go below the necessary level and it might prevent you from accessing other torrent files or even receiving seed information for this file alone. How would you maintain a 1:1 ratio to survive with the same account in such a case? This is just one case, I think you should read the "theory behind GreedyTorrent" part in the documentation which mentions exactly why this software was made.
I believe the original protocol specification is a real beauty, for it doesn't enforce a 1:1 ratio, only recommends it. The original lets the leeches survive, even by very slow download speeds, so what's wrong with GreedyTorrent, which does the same?
"Will the BitTorrent private tracker system suffer the same fate as other P2P protocols?" I guess not. BitTorrent community is full of resourceful people who has very high upload speeds and are willing to upload. And by design, the protocol makes sure that high uploader always gets preference -- which would force even leeches capable of uploading faster to upload faster. |

So why would you let it go to such ratio's as 4.0 and above... now tell me who is really gonna need all of that to maintain a 1:1 ratio..... i think you should at least cap it to 1.5....... And I wonder how many ppl will actually seed? I know there is the option but who is really gonna use it... please atleast seed back even if you use this... |

dishonesty ......
Oh you think this s/w creates dishonesty then i'll say u better go away from the world of torrents cos from MPAA guys point of view , all p2p are pirates or thieves
some people are born for seeding and people like me.. happily receive what they gave and i gave some portion of it to some other poor people ... |

Not paying the MPAA that time is like not donating for a tracker.
If nobody donates and there are no ads, the tracker doesnt make profit, even the opposite!
But, from basics, visiting the tracker is what it is meant for. And watching movies is what they are meant for.
Scamming your fellows is worse.
On private trackers, the main approach is to give and to take. For most users, getting leeched doesn't feel too good - you want downstream in return. You're even not satisfied with 1:1, so why should others be when they get 3:1, getting leeched by some "high ratio" liar?
It is dishonest to apply to rules and "getting part" only to exploit other real members.
If you think you are too demanding to hold the ratio, then please use public torrents - there we already have what GreedyTorrent aims to create. You don't need to hold a ratio and anyway, you can download. I also like public trackers because of that.
But private trackers obviously don't like people that say "uh, my ADSL is so asymmetric, can I please hit and run", that's why they were created. Leave your torrent online while you are away, wait and your ratio might do magical things. Care about it.
You should expect more seeds than leeches - why? Members want to upload as much as they download - let's say 15 seeders, 1 leecher. You can send ~6,66% of the DL volume. This occurs for some days, new leechers come now and then, and after 15 new leechers, you could have a 1:1 ratio. Of course you don't want to invest in higher upload, so you can't send fast enough - so wait longer. That way, you can in return start downloading a torrent when you want, fast. Accept the good AND bad sides, or dont get part - above is how the system works. It's true, there are very leet trackers, so don't use them if you only have a crappy line.
And you would wonder what happens to all those webseeds if there are leechers - they disappear. You don't pay them, but that doesn't make them free to operate. Or do we have lots of webseeds on public trackers?
Leech the usenet! Damn fast! Not any ratio or such.
And one thing about the official BT client: As ADSL user, uploading lags me, it also produces traffic. If I can't even see where I am, how much I still need to upload to get a fair 1:1, how do you think I could do it? It is muuuch more difficult to blindly do something if you don't really see the results. You have less motivation. If there's corporate server and the big masses shouldn't get it down, it's perfect, but not if we have a community consisting of users only and many torrents. And that's private trackers - use it or stay away.
A ratio supports helpful users to achieve what they planned - to be fair.
The program is definately nice, but I really don't like it's aim.
It will help naive people to just don't look if they can seed or how it was called.
It well help them to laugh about seeding. |

Hey... in my experience the only-seeds scenario occurs often, and becomes real trouble.... I down many files with only seeds, I have to keep them on my HDD (valuable space!!!), waiting in queues running for weeks waiting for another leech to give, god knows for how long... As soon as one comes up, the fastest seeder on the block gives him everything he needs. The new leech almost always ignores my poor upload speed . So, do I have to wait like there's no tomorrow to get my ratio back???? And what do I do meanwhile, surf comic books online???
The only method I found working in such a case (of course before GT!!!) is to up a new torrent. I have to goto my local video store, get a DVD, rip (damn, dont rip, and I have to up gigs!) and put it for seeding. And the next day I see the whole damn community throws it away saying its a duplicate!! And even if I do, isn't it like I'm sending an open invite to MPAA to search my home??? Hey... btw, that day I'm not just subscribing piracy, but promoting too!!
I'll seed for sure when I have a better connection, but for now, I guess this saves some time |

GT wont destroy torrent community coz i aint manipulating with peers ... only thing it does is to lie to the tracker.
i usually downloads around 60 GB a month and uploads around 40 GB ... i will be seeding/sharing as usual , only difference is that tracker will be seeing 60 GB upload
so does this hurt the community ? i dont think so .... |

Admin you still haven't answered why there are ratios such as 4.0? |
